Would you take a prescription medication to boost your sexual desire? In America, a new drug called Addyi is now available for women with low sexual desire. Some people were hoping it would be the ‘female Viagra.’ Sadly, it has fizzled out faster that a campfire on a rainy day.
Rx for Desire – Hope or Hype?
In 2015 Addyi became available for women who have low sexual desire. Read more about who can get it and whether it works
To me, it is frustrating that our modern culture encourages us to look for a magic pill to fix us. Given the huge success with drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, it is no wonder that pharmaceutical companies are searching for a comparable drug for women.
But any sex therapist will tell you, the female sexual response is complex and involves more than just getting women hot and wet. For most women, increasing blood flow to the vagina to address difficulties with arousal may not get to the actual problem — which is often a lack of sexual desire.
Do you want to be labeled as ‘broken’ or defective?
The problem with the pharmaceutical approach to women’s sexual response is that to search for a ‘cure’ requires that we carry a new medical diagnosis. And that is the case for the new drug, Addyi. To get it, you must be labelled with a disorder. But a waning libido, low sexual response, and vaginal dryness or pain may be normal in the context of menopause as estrogen levels fall. It can be expected. The same is true following certain illnesses or medical procedures. And if the sexual consequences of medical issues can be expected and anticipated, we need only address the factors that exacerbate them. And 9 times out of 10, the only time medication is required is to address hormonal deficiencies. How empowering is that???
Nearly all sexual issues can be solved with education, coaching and even simple mindfulness techniques!
Check out the 5 biggest reasons I would NOT prescribe this new drug here.
